English
Firstly, we are exploring the text ‘Ice Planet’ where will be creating a fact file and having visits from a real-life polar explorer. Then we are continuing to explore the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. The story provides plenty of adventure and opens a world of imagination for our children. We will be continuing to encourage the children to include capital letters, full stops, correct letter formation and finger spaces in their writing. We will also be supporting the children to independently develop their writing by continuing to include key features such as onomatopoeias, similes, metaphors, alliteration, adjectives and different sentence types.
Reading
We will continue to encourage the children to immerse themselves in reading good quality texts for pleasure. This term, we will again be asking the children to read five times per week to an adult at home. We would be grateful if you could discuss the text and illustrations with your child to develop their comprehension of the books. Children will continue bringing home 4 reading books comprising of books from the school Bug Club scheme and books linked to the phonics sessions taught within school. Books will be changed on a Wednesday. Please support your child by logging their read on Boom Reader each time they read to an adult. If five entries are recorded each week, your child will be awarded a raffle ticket which goes towards the end of term reading raffle where children can win a special treat and a book.
We are holding a year 1 reading workshop on Monday 3rd March 2025. This will give parents and carers a chance to come into their child’s class at 2.45pm to read a story with their child/children. We hope this promotes our reading ethos as a school and showcases to parents/carers what amazing readers their children are. We hope to see as many parents and carers there as possible 😊
Mathematics
This term we will be continuing to develop our understanding of number and place value within 50. We will further develop our skills of solving Addition and Subtraction problems; now involving 2-digit numbers. We will also be learning about different measures (including length, height, mass and volume); using appropriate units to measure these.
Science
This term we will be looking at Animals including humans as well as learning about plants This will include using our observational skills to look into animals in more detail. They will be plant detectives; using observational skills to identify common wild and garden plant.
P.E. and Swimming
P.E kits are required to be worn to school on the day of your child’s P.E. lesson. The school P.E. kit consists of plain black shorts or joggers, a black sweatshirt or hoody and white t-shirt (with or without the school logo) and trainers. Please ensure that if your child wears earrings to school, these are either removed or taped up with tape provided from home.
P.E. will take place on a Wednesday for 1B and 1P. 1C will be swimming on a Wednesday (starting 18.12.24) so they will need to come in school uniform and bring their swimming kit each week. Please note that swimming is now in 10-week blocks, rather than half termly.
We are very fortunate to have access to a swimming pool at Trinity, and in Year 1 we feel that it is very important that children take advantage of this resource. It is very important, therefore, that the children remember to bring their swimming kits to every session. All children must have an appropriate swimming kit and swimming hat. If, for any reason, your child is unable to take part in P.E. or swimming, a signed letter must be provided.
Forest School Kit:
- Woolly hat/sun hat
- Gloves and spares
- Waterproof jacket/coat
- Fleece/sweatshirt
- Long trousers
- Socks and spares
- Stout shoes/wellies/boots
Uniform
Correct school uniform must be worn at all times, and all garments must be labelled with your child's name. The labelling of swimming kit and bags would also be extremely beneficial.
Homework
In response to ongoing discussion with parents, we will begin sending regular home learning tasks in the Spring term. We will be sending home weekly homework on Friday. This will include Spellings to learn at home which will link to what we are learning in class. These can be logged on boom reader as a read.
How can you support your child at home?
- TT Rockstars and One Minute Maths app
- Complete weekly Spelling and Maths homework linked to current area of learning
- Read 5 times a week and log on Boom Reader
- Access our school subscription to Curriculum Visions which provides books related to our topics such as History and Geography. Please search for the ‘Curriculum Visions’ website. Our log in: CVtrinity/1 Password: Newton
Children can access any book which they are interested in. The texts “Britain from above” and “Kenya” will link to our first Geography topic.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask! You can contact any member of the staffing team by email addresses listed below. Alternatively, phone the school office and a message will be passed on.
Many thanks,
Mrs Powell, Miss Chandler and Miss Bowen
