We will continue to encourage our children to immerse themselves in reading good quality texts for pleasure, and we will provide children with suggested books to read at a level appropriate for your child. Our classroom libraries have a wide range of texts that the children are encouraged to select from and enjoy both inside and outside of school. Continuing from September, we are again asking the children to read five times at home. We will continue to be using Boom Reader to log reads. If you are having any issues logging into Boom Reader, please speak to your class teacher. Our reading raffle continues so fingers crossed your child could be picked out next. Remember every week that your child achieves their five reads at home, they will earn them a ticket in the raffle! It would be fantastic if you could, whenever possible, discuss what they are reading with them.
English
We will be looking at books linking closely to the topics in our curriculum. We will be starting with a narrative piece of writing based on the picture book called ‘The Flood’ by Alvaro F. Villa. We will then explore other writing opportunities, including looking at ‘The True Story of the Three Little Pigs’. There will be a big focus on basic skills, handwriting and on broadening vocabulary across a range of writing genres.
Mathematics
We will be continuing our work delving into multiplication and division and then the rest if the term, we will be looking shape, space and measure, and fractions. In preparation for the national Year 4 Multiplication Check, we will dedicate some time to working on the children’s times table knowledge. We focused on the 3 times table this term and will be moving onto the 4 times table in the Spring Term. We would encourage your child to continue learning at home, using their TT Rockstars login wherever possible. If children would like to practise for the Year 4 Multiplication Check, they can access the following website to help them: https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/477/Multiplication-Tables-Check
Science
This term we will be learning about Light and Shadow and then some work on Plants. During our Light and Shadow unit, we will be exploring the use of mirrors, torches and objects to describe the science of how we see things and why we sometimes don’t see things. In our plants unit, we will explore the different roles and functions parts of the plant have, and explore different types of plants.
P.E. and Swimming
This term, during class teacher led PE, children will be learning fundamental skills of football, exploring different techniques and tactics. Children are required to wear P.E kits on P.E. days. For year 3, this will be a Tuesday for every child. Kit consists of black shorts, white t-shirt (with or without the school logo) and trainers. Please ensure that if your child has earrings, these must either be removed by the child themselves or taped up with tape provided from home. Please bear in mind the weather and you may feel that dark coloured joggers and a dark sweatshirt or hoodie may be required. Naming PE kit items is highly advised as many jumpers were left unclaimed and unnamed last term.
On a Thursday afternoon, the children will continue to be enriched with an art lesson from Mrs Ammonds and an exciting sporting opportunity from an outside professional. This will mean that 3L and 3W will need to come to school in their P.E. kit on Thursdays. 3C will be swimming and therefore will need to bring in their swimming kit and towel each Thursday. Please note that if your child is not taking part in swimming that week a note must be written explaining the reasons.
