A warm welcome to Year 4
Dear parents and carers,
We hope that you all have a relaxing summer break. We can’t wait to welcome your wonderful children back to school, for what is sure to be an exciting and enjoyable year. We very much look forward to working with you and your children over the next academic year, and we just wanted to share some information with you regarding the upcoming autumn term.
The year group is divided into 3 classes:
4A is taught by Miss Abraham 4S is taught by Miss Steele 4R-J taught by Ms Randell-Jones
The year group is further supported by the lovely Mrs Short and Mrs Davies.
English This year, we will be exploring a wide range of text styles and genres in our English lessons, covering both fiction and non-fiction. Initially, we will be studying the wonderful ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ written by J.K. Rowling. After kicking off our unit with our Harry Potter Day on Friday 5th September 2025 (children can dress up as one of the characters if they wish to), we will then base our first writing unit around this book. During the course of the term, there will be a big focus on basic skills, handwriting and on broadening vocabulary across a range of writing genres.
Reading We shall continue to encourage our children to share our love of reading. As mentioned, we will begin the year by reading the modern classic ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’. During our reading lessons, we will explore a wide range of text types and genres. We will explore texts that are linked to other areas of the curriculum, and we will look at extracts that are connected to Harry Potter in various ways. Each class will have their own story book, which will be read to the class at the beginning of every afternoon, and on Friday afternoon we will have ‘Book Club’, where children will present to the class a book of their choosing. The reading scrap book will also continue to go home on a regular basis for those children who wish to contribute to it.
Your child will be bringing home one of our level-appropriate books from our reading scheme. We are asking our children to read five times independently at home and we ask for your support in this by recording their reads on ‘BoomReader’ and, when possible discussing their reading. We look forward to hearing about what they have been reading. On Friday, we will be having a look on BoomReader to see how often the children have been reading at home. All children who read five times a week will be entered into a half-termly draw where they have the chance to win prizes.
Mathematics We will be starting our work looking at place value, progressing on to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in order to reinforce their calculation skills. In Year 4, children are formally assessed on their times tables in June, in line with the national multiplication tables check (there will be a parent meeting regarding this later in the academic year). Therefore, it is imperative that children can quickly and accurately recall all multiplication facts up to 12 x 12. We will be practising tables in Maths lessons and would appreciate it if you could encourage your children to continue practising them at home.
P.E. P.E kits are required to be worn to school on the day of your child’s P.E. lesson. This term, P.E will be on a Wednesday afternoon. The school P.E. kit consists of plain black shorts or joggers, a plain black sweatshirt or hoody, a white t-shirt (with or without the school logo) and trainers. Please ensure that if your child wears earrings to school, these are either removed by the child themselves or taped up with tape provided from home. The first PE lesson will be on Wednesday 10th September 2025. |
P.P.A
The first PPA session will be on Thursday 11th September 2025.
- 4S are swimming in the first term and therefore will need their swimming kit every Thursday. They should come into school in their school uniform.
- 4R-J and 4A should come in P.E. kit on Thursday 11th September 2025 for PPA as one of their sessions will be P.E based.
This will change later in the year so that every class will have swum by the end of the year.
Wider Year 4 curriculum
This half term, we will be studying ‘States of Matter’ in science. We will be investigating states of different materials, how materials can change shape, which variables affect this, and how this links to the water cycle.
In geography this half term, we be studying lines of longitude and latitude, the equator, the different hemispheres and how this links to climates of different countries around the world.
In R.E, will be exploring the religion of Hinduism, looking closely at what Hindus believe God is like.
In R.H.S.E, we will look at what it means to be part of a team, what our rights and responsibilities are, understanding rewards and that actions have consequences and look at being a school citizen.
After the October half term break, we will begin rehearsals for the wonderfully festive Year 4 Christmas Carol Concert, which will be held at Holy Trinity Church on Wednesday 17th December 2025, starting at 2pm. There will be more information regarding this closer to the time.
Homework
In addition to home reading, we will be handing out weekly times tables and spelling homework. This will be handed out on a Monday, and children will be given house points the following Monday. The spellings and times tables will be linked to our learning in school that week, so this will give you an opportunity to discuss their learning with them and support them in deepening their understanding.
Uniform
Correct school uniform must be worn at all times in line with our policy, and all garments must be labelled with your child's name. The labelling of swimming kit and bags would also be extremely beneficial. Please can we also remind you about your child’s hair accessories ensuring that they are in line with school expectations. Hair accessories should be small, plain, simple and in the school colours of yellow, grey or hair coloured.
Snacks
In line with our HEART values, we aim to promote good health here at Trinity Primary School. With that in mind, only fruit and vegetables are permitted as break time snacks.
Pencil Cases
This year, Year 4 will be providing all children with a pencil case and the necessary stationery. To help maintain a focused classroom environment, we kindly ask that if children wish to bring their own pencil cases, they only use them at the teacher’s discretion. We've found that personal pencil cases can become a distraction, and our goal is to keep classrooms calm, organised, and conducive to learning. Thank you for your support.
